The new app, called UfakeIDs, scans the barcode on a driver’s license and instantly verifies encoded information, displaying the card owner’s name, date of birth, ID expiration and ID number. The app’s developer says the software is supposed to verify the authenticity of government-issued driver licenses and military IDs.

UfakeIDs was created by Intellicheck Mobilisa CEO Nelson Ludlow of Port Townsend, Wash., Discovery News reports. Although the introductory version is just a couple bucks on the iTunes App Store, serious bar and restaurant owners will need to purchase annual or monthly licenses, according to a company release.

Ludlow admitted to U.S. News & World Report the app won’t be able to stop every fake, but emphasized it is a cheap and pretty efficient option for most bars.

“We don’t catch all fake IDs, but we do catch a lot,” Ludlow said. “China is making a lot of high-end fake IDs that people pay 200 or 300 dollars for, and we catch a significant amount of them. If someone fiddles with a date or something in the bar code … you better do it exactly the right way.”

The current version of UfakeIDs stores ID data on one’s device, so bars can prove whether they did or did not in fact scan an ID, and it contains images of what genuine IDs from various states or countries should look like, too. (The press release says that a future version of the app will allow users to upload data from scanned IDs to a central server.)

The app might also impede the drinking habits of those who are of age, allowing bar owners to check whether or not a person has been banned, or help them set up a VIP list to ruin potential patrons’ self-esteem.

But there are some limits, as Vice’s Motherboard found out in a test of a fake ID:

When I tested the card on a friend’s particularly high-grade fake (ordered online for a whopping $200 — it supposedly bested blacklights and bouncers’ scanners in the past), UfakeIDs did not say it was invalid, but it didn’t approve it either. The phone more or less froze, suggesting that the technology is not 100 percent fool-proof yet. A street-smart 18-year-old could claim that the lack of an “invalid” message does not prove the card is a fake. Similarly, one could always use a sibling’s expired ID to triumph the app, though outsmarting the bouncer is another story.

While the app is touted as a great pocket tool for bouncers and servers, it can be used for any age-restricted product, like tobacco products or R-rated movies. Theoretically, it could also be used to stop a middle-aged person from claiming a senior citizen discount — although that’s probably as common as actual voter fraud.

Other apps to spot fakes — and even to create fakes — do exist, but Ludlow insisted to U.S. News that UfakeIDs is superior because it can scan IDs from all 50 states and the Canadian provinces.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting to get a smartphone versions of our driver’s licenses so we can completely ditch our wallets.

There are several ways to make your very own Fake ID. In this tutorial I will show you how to publish a professional one. This way may cost you some money, but if you want the confidence to walk into your local liquor store and buy a bottle of Southern Comfort, this is the solution to all your problems.

Supplies:

• Computer with Editing software (Adobe Photoshop)
• Inkjet Printer
• Special” Teslin” Paper( almost identical to standard PVC plastic)
• Home Laminator
• Hologram (optional)
• Driver’s License Template

Step One- Making and Editing your Template:

In order to make this happen you’re going to obtain a Template online, which is basically a blank Driver’s License with no information on it. One of my favorite templates is the Florida State Driver’s License. This template is very simple to edit and all you have to do is enter your new information. Buy fake id online click here.

*In order to edit the Template, you will need a program called Adobe Photoshop; you can download a Trial version at their website here.

Here are some tips for editing your template:

• The Font used in this template is called Franklin Gothic Medium. (You should already have this loaded on your computer, if not it can be downloaded from online for free.
• You will also need a high quality photo, in which you can imbed into the template. The photo must have you standing in front of a light blue or gray background with the top of your shoulders included.

• I also found a very useful website that generates Driver’s License numbers which carry information about your License. The Website can be found here.
• Next, you will want to make a back part of the ID. This is fairly simple to make. With a white background you can add a black bar that goes across the top and type some information regarding the DMV and restrictions.

• When you’re done entering all the information will need to add a signature right below the picture. For this you can download a unique hand written font online in cursive format.

Step Two- Paper and Printing:

Because of forgery, the Government has made it impossible for you to use you home inkjet printer to print on the Standard PVC plastic unless you want to go online and purchase a special thousand dollar printer. This is why we use paper called Teslin. It bends, looks, and feels almost identical to PVC, and it can be bought for cheap here.

Now that you have your paper and Template ready, you should print on a regular piece of paper first to assure it is the correct size, and if you need to modify. If everything has gone dandy you can begin to print on a sheet of Teslin and continue to the next step.

Step Three-Lamination:

After your template is printed out, it needs to be laminated. Like everything else the type of lamination varies depending on the material you are laminating, a good thickness to work with is 10 mil. To laminate Teslin you need butterfly pouches for Teslin. Laminating pouches also come in different varieties. You can get ones that are glossy or that are matte. Also they come with hi or low co magnetic strips. Lamination can be found here. A decent laminator is a must for the id specialist. My favorite is the Docuseal 40 which is available for 40 dollars.

China Is Making Near-Perfect Fake American Driver’s Licenses

Good news, underage drinkers: China is making fake driver’s licenses now.

CBS Chicago reports that these overseas fakes are flooding through O’Hare. They’re bought online in the US for about $150, produced in China, then smuggled into this country and back to the buyer. The video report shows them stuffed into tea sets and jewelry boxes.

The report asks the defining question of 21st century America, “is national security at risk?”

CBS wonders aloud if these licenses are good enough to get on a plane. The US Department of State replied that no, these counterfeits’ holograms, while excellent, do not pass laser and ultra-violet light tests.

Some New Fake IDs Pass as Legitimate Licenses

A new generation of fake driver’s licenses has infiltrated the Washington, D.C. region, many of them sophisticated enough to fool law enforcement and scanning devices, according to a review by the News4 I-Team.

Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control officials reported an influx of thousands of phony licenses in recent months, including a series of fakes that successfully tricked the driver’s license readers utilized by county police officers during traffic stops.

An overwhelming number of the licenses were confiscated from teenagers, who’d used the licenses to purchase alcohol at restaurants or retail stores.

“They look like the type of identification you’d go to the motor vehicle department and purchase,” Montgomery County Police Sgt. Mark White said. “Some people are trusting these [licenses] so much, they’re actually passing them as legitimate driver’s licenses to police.”

Law enforcement officials suspect the latest wave of IDs was generated in China. The driver’s licenses are manufactured there, officials said, then sold online to American teenagers.

Police said some of the sites, including vendors which were recently scrutinized by Congress, sell licenses for approximately $150.

Customers send credit card information or cash overseas to the site operators and later receive the phony identification in the mail.

Lee Williams, an investigator for Montgomery County, said the ID manufacturers have meticulous attention to detail, and include some of the microscopic details featured in legitimate state driver’s licenses, including watermarks and fine print.

The News4 I-Team, using a scanning device popular with bar bouncers and taverns, tested many of the seized licenses held by police in Maryland. Approximately 100 of those tested successfully deceived the machine, reading and displaying on the scanner as if authentic.

Increasingly sophisticated identification raises Homeland Security concerns, Williams said. He said a bulk of the phony licenses seized in Maryland “are good enough to get you on an airplane.”

The risk of phony IDs impacts the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, according to records obtained by the News4 I-Team.

A database of seizures by U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows a nearly 130 percent increase in seizures of altered or counterfeit travel documents in Virginia, Maryland, D.C., southern New Jersey and Delaware. Those documents include altered passports.
